A Vancouver First Meeting: Seawall, Rain, and a Backup Plan

A short stretch of the seawall, the Aquabus to Granville Island and indoor backups for Vancouver's wettest months, ideas for a first WeMet meeting.

Introductions have started in Singapore. Other cities open one by one.

A short stretch of the seawall when it is dry, and Granville Island or a gallery on Hornby Street once the rain sets in.

WeMet (wemet.dating) is a modern matchmaking service for adults in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States and Canada. No swiping and no chat: WeMet uses AI to choose one introduction a week, when there is someone who fits what you both said you want, and explains why before you see a photo. Introductions open city by city.

A short piece of the seawall, not the whole nine kilometres

Destination Vancouver describes the Stanley Park Seawall as nine kilometres long end to end, which is well past what two people meeting for the first time need to cover. Pick a short section instead — the piece closest to wherever you are already planning to be gives a shared direction to walk in without turning the afternoon into a hike. The City closes part of the seawall, between Prospect Point and Third Beach, for maintenance each winter, so it is worth checking the City's seawall page for the current closure before you fix a route.

English Bay or Kitsilano Beach could also suit a walk before or after a coffee. The Aquabus runs small passenger ferries across False Creek to Granville Island, docking near the Public Market and the Arts Club Theatre, which turns a walk into a small outing with a destination on the other side rather than a there-and-back.

When November rain changes the plan

Destination Vancouver's own climate page describes winter here with frequent rainy days, and November and December as the wettest months of the year. A plan that only works outdoors is a risky one for a first meeting in Vancouver, so it helps to have somewhere covered in reserve. The Granville Island Public Market gives you stalls to wander and something to point at and discuss without needing a table. The Vancouver Art Gallery, at 750 Hornby Street, is an option when a walk is out of the question. The Bloedel Conservatory, an indoor tropical conservatory inside Queen Elizabeth Park, has paid admission and stays warm while the rain carries on outside. The Museum of Vancouver, in Vanier Park, could suit a slower first meeting spent moving through exhibits at your own pace.

Age 19, and a Pacific clock that will not move this year

Joining from Vancouver starts at 19, a year past the usual 18 elsewhere, because that is British Columbia's age of majority. The province announced on 2 March 2026 that "on Nov. 1, 2026, when previously clocks would have been turned back an hour, no change will be made," which keeps Vancouver on daylight time straight through this winter. Once introductions open here, that fixed clock is what a Wednesday 7pm letter will be timed against, with three days after it lands to answer. WeMet runs its five countries separately, borders or no borders, which matters here since Vancouver sits close to the line with Washington State.

Take the quiz · How WeMet works

Questions

Why do I need to be 19, not 18, to join from Vancouver?

British Columbia sets its age of majority at 19. WeMet follows that, so you need to be 19 or over to join from Vancouver.

Is British Columbia really skipping the clock change this November?

Yes. The provincial government confirmed that clocks will not be turned back on 1 November 2026, so Vancouver stays on daylight time through the winter. When introductions open here, the Wednesday letter is timed to 7pm Vancouver time, whatever the clocks elsewhere are doing.

Could I be introduced to someone across the line in Washington State?

No. WeMet runs introductions by country, and Canada and the United States are two of the five it serves separately. Being next to Washington State does not change that: everyone a Vancouver profile could be introduced to is also joining from Canada.

What if the day you'd planned to meet turns out rainy?

Vancouver has plenty of rainy days, especially in November and December, so it is worth having an indoor option ready — a market hall, a gallery, or a museum — rather than counting on the weather holding.

What if the part of the seawall I wanted to walk is closed?

The City closes a section of the Stanley Park Seawall each winter for maintenance. Check the City's seawall page before you set a route, and keep a second stretch in mind.

Is WeMet open in Vancouver yet?

Not yet. Introductions have not started in Vancouver yet. Introductions have started in Singapore. Other cities open one by one. You can join, verify your phone and email, take the free quiz and build your profile in Vancouver today, free of charge.

How does WeMet verify members who join from Vancouver?

The same way everywhere: you verify your mobile number and email, then take a selfie that is compared with your main profile photo before anyone else sees you. WeMet never asks for a driver licence, passport or other government identification.

What age do I need to be to join from Vancouver?

You need to be 19 or over. British Columbia is one of the Canadian provinces and territories where the age of majority is 19, so it sets WeMet's minimum age for Vancouver, higher than the general 18+ rule in most of the five countries.

Where is my data stored if I join from Vancouver?

In Australia, in Sydney. WeMet holds all its data there, whichever of the five countries you join from. Support is available every day, 09:00–21:00 Sydney time, in English and Chinese.

If introductions open in Vancouver, how would the weekly letter work?

When introductions open where you live, WeMet writes to you once a week — at 7pm local time in Vancouver — only when there is someone who fits what you both said you want. You would have three days to decide, and some weeks there would be no one.
